Southern Revere Farm Brewery and Winery

April 16, 2026.  From the name and from the offerings, it should be clear that Southern Revere is a brewery first and a winery second.  It is one of the first Virginia farm breweries to serve wine; and other fermented products.  But the focus seems to be on the suds.

Southern Revere is another establishment close to Interstate 64 corridor, in Louisa about 25 minutes east of Charlottesville.  It is part of Louisa County’s Fermentation Farm Trail that covers the county’s wineries, breweries and cideries.  The Grime Family (Jason and Sheridan) and the Spencer Family (Dave and Paula) first started planting their three acres of vines in 2018 and opened for business in 2021.  Paula and Sheridan kept their day jobs for the insurance while Jason and Dave retired from their jobs to work the winery-brewery business.

The winery is located on Jack Jouett Road, named after the man who rode to warn Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and the rest of the Virginia legislature, who had fled Richmond, that the British were in hot pursuit to arrest them.  This was June 1781 during the Revolutionary War, and Jouett’s ride from Louisa to Charlottesville to raise the alarm has been called the "Ride of the Southern Revere,” the South’s answer to Paul Revere.*

In this part of modern Louisa County, the winery is growing four grape varieties: Chardonel, Chambourcin, Petit Verdot, and Vidal Blanc.  The bottle labels indicate that their wines are supplemented with a lot of grapes from the nearby Monticello AVA of which Southern Revere Cellar is not a part.

Wine is produced in a custom crush arrangement over at Septenary-Seven Oaks by winemaker Corry Craighill.  I suppose that with Corry at the helm, it’s not a surprise that Southern Revere won a Gold Medal this year (2026) at the Virginia Governor’s Cup competition.   That’s quite a commitment considering they only produce 100 cases or less a year of any of their wines, according to co-owner, Dave Spencer. Dave told us that wine and beer split their business around 50/50.  On the wine side, he told us that they have a Viognier release coming and then a Seyval Blanc.

The tasting room and bar was quite modest and simple.

But it was air conditioned, which was a good thing on the hot April day of our visit.  The garage-door windows were closed to the heat.  A late afternoon shuffle of guys in ballcaps came in for beer at the bar.  No one was having wine.  A Mexican food truck was chugging away outside in the sun.

Dogs, children, and outside food are okay at Southern Revere because there are only lite snacks available for purchase.  The pond looks like a nice place to lay your picnic blanket out.

Southern Revere is available for weddings, but their focus is on camping.  Across their 70 acre property, there are walking trails as well as three campsites folks can rent.  One of these has an RV electric hook-up.  They do have an Air B&B on the send floor of the tasting room building.  It sleeps six, is nicely appointed with a full kitchen, and is reasonably priced.  Consider it for crashing after a day of hiking.

Here are the wines we sampled:

2024 Chardonnay.  The Chardonnay is a straight varietal from grapes in the Monticello AVA.  It won a Gold medal at the 2026 Virginia Governor’s Cup.  It has a pretty hefty ABV for a Chardonnay at 13.5%, but Kim found it weak and lacking in taste.  She gave it a C.

2024 Rosé.  The Southern Revere Rosé is almost mauve in color, very light with a slight Pet Nat fizz.  It didn’t seem floral or layered.  100% Chambourcin and 12.9% ABV.  I gave it a C.

2023 Cabernet Franc.  This straight varietal – 100% Cab Franc - does not have much texture.  Low tannin and a late-arriving vegetal taste.  It is labeled as made mostly from grapes in the Monticello AVA.  I gave it a B-

2023 Estate Chambourcin.  This wine is labeled from Louisa – 100% Chambourcin from the local vineyard.  Bright fruit.  Warm and round mouthfeel.  13/2% ABV.  B+

2023 Spark.  Once again, this wine is mostly from grapes in the Monticello AVA – 100% Seyval Blanc.  Nice lingering buzz.  Green apple.  12.3% ABV.  This sparkler won a silver medal at the 2025 Virgina Governor’s Cup.  I gave it a B.

Southern Revere Cellars is serving the local community in Louisa with good beers and growing recognition of its wines as well.

*The Southern Revere Cellars website, https://southernrevere.com/, has a fuller telling of the story of this ride, with route maps and illustrations.  Merely select the “No” option when it asks if you are over 21 years of age.  Selecting “No” will take you to the history of young Jack’s ride and the evil British cavalry officer, Banastre Tarleton.  (The character of Colonel Tavington in Mel Gibson's movie The Patriot was loosely based on Tarleton.)  Not all of the patriot legislators made it to safety, however.  Among those the British managed to capture was a guy named Daniel Boone who went on to different notoriety after the War.
