Two Twisted Posts Winery

March 13, 2026.  We continued north on the Harpers Ferry Road to Two Twisted Posts Winery.  Even though it has a Purcellville address, and we’re still in Loudoun County, its actually closer to Harpers Ferry in West Virginia.  According to their website, owner Theresa Robertson was born at a tavern in Colchester England called “Thomas Great-Two Twisted Posts.”*  Later they discovered a seal from the old tavern in Virginia and decided to name the winery after the old tavern.

The Story of Two Twisted Posts

Two Twisted Posts started its vineyard in 2008 with the couple Brad Robertson managing the vineyard and Theresa handling the wine making duties.  Lawn and vines surround the centerpiece big red barn and offer many places to take a picnic or lounge on the grass.  However, as the wind during our visit that day carried a deep February-like chill, we were blown inside the tasting room where we met manager Casey Luther.  We wish we could have spent more time with Casey to experience why this small smiling blonde was recognized as Wine Ambassador of the Year at the latest Loudoun County Wine Awards.  But she was having a busy Friday.

The current tasting room opened in 2014 and you enter through the side of the red barn.  The bar is immediately on your right and a small gathering space is on the left.  Proceed ahead into a larger unfinished space where larger groups can congregate.  A fake fireplace on one side of the room struggles to heat the rest of the room.  Lighting is good and might be romantic at night.  Still, the room is cavernous and can easily get loud.  No comfy chairs or sofas.  That patrons brought their dogs inside is not a selling point to us.

Casey was able to tell us about their vineyard acreage (10 acres under vine), their production volume (around 2,000 cases a year) and about weddings and special events.  Two Twisted Posts can do weddings and retirement parties and other events.  Looks like Casey is the go-to person on those events.  They also host regular events like Karaoke Night, Sip-and-Paint, and various live musicians on Saturdays.

Two Twisted Posts won the whole Virginia Governor’s Cup competition in 2014.  In the 2026 competition, they received one gold medal and four silver’s.  Our standard tasting featured a couple of winners from prior years.   I will say that the winery serves its tastings in tiny plastic thimbles that barely are enough to get a sense of the wines.

2022 Chardonnay.   This was a silver medal winner in the 2025 Governor’s Cup.  Kim gave it a B+.  It was aged sur lie with no malolactic fermentation.  ABV of 13.6% .   It appears that Theresa likes her Chardonnays, and this is indeed a good one.

2022 Petit Verdot.  Two Twisted Posts won another silver medal in the 2025 Cup for this Petit Verdot.  It is a strong wine – leather and smoke and strong tannin.  Definitely not a sipping wine.  Get you some dense red meat.  Listed around 13.6% ABV on the website but felt higher  I rated it a B.

2020 Cabernet Franc.  I prefer this lighter Cabernet Franc.  It’s aged 24 months to bring it under control.  It grows on you.  B to B+ rating.

2020 Merlot.  The Merlot had a brown tint as befits a wine with a chocolate finish.  Mild.  A good average wine.  I rate it a B.

NV Don’t Call Me A Cab.  Two Twisted Posts uses Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Chambourcin from different vintages to make the “Don’t Call Me a Cab” blend.  A good daily wine.  Light and unassuming.  Smokey.  I gave it a B+.

Any north Loudoun road trip should have Two Twisted Posts in the itinerary.

*My search on the internet shows a Museum Street Tavern in Colchester, which used to be called the “Thomas Tavern.”  I don’t know if this was the Thomas Great-Two Twisted Posts Tavern.
